Penduka//a Namibian word for “wake up!”
I love to fangirl the God sized dreams that others have bravely pursued and this is no exception! A few months ago, I had the privilege to have coffee with the passionate Joy McMillian and were instant friends! This fiery woman of God carries with her a message that reaches across nations right from Mid-Michigan!
For the past 30 days, I have been completely honored to be a small part of her book launch team for Joy’s newest book, Penduka, and got to have an advance copy! I ran away to my bubble bath while hubby watched the kids and devoured this book! This book awakened once again the passions that I know God has placed in my heart and stirred me to MOVE!
I thought I would share just a few bites of my favorite parts and be sure to read to the end, because I’m giving away a copy of the book and study guide and journal AND feeling so inspired, I made a special edition Adopting Nations pillowcase!!!!!
- “There is no manual for the passionate life. It’s a wild adventure of taking one brave step after another, taking your creative pulse, keeping your ear tuned to the heavens, and moving forward.”
Somewhere, my husband is dying that someone else wrote this in print, in a book, when it’s really about me. LOL! When I read this, I just about jumped out of my seat shouting for my husband to read it! Us passionate types, understand this fully. I get ideas in my head to do something big and “crazy” and I then I jump out and try it while people around me shake their heads and wonder about me. #adoptfromDRCongo!!! #hahahahahaaaaa….But if they were really honest, they might really be thinking in their heart, “I wish I could do that too.” Friends, I’m going to be honest with you. Much of the time, I don’t really know what I’m doing! I mean, I jump and I don’t have all the answers. And that’s OK. Like Joy says, it’s just one brave step after another. It’s keeping my eyes open for whatever opportunity that God places in my hands and using that on THIS DAY to my best ability, listening to the Holy Spirit all along the way. Sometimes moving forward happens in leaps and bounds, but most of the time, it’s painstakingly slow and virtually impossibly to even see movement, trusting that God is taking care of it and sometimes those ideas and passions that I bravely step out and try, even fail. And it’s all O.K. I wouldn’t trade it for a minute because what is precious and more valuable, is the heart change that God does in my through the process, and the tribe you meet along the way. Yes, Joy. No manual, but oh so much fun!
2. “Charisma may be useful in expressing our passion in colorful display, but our character will always be the steady driving force that sustains our passion through famine or feast.”
Strong, powerful, truthful words. I think most of us have to learn this the hard way and unfortunately, most of us have been hurt by someone else learning this hard way. Passion is often mistaken for charisma, which looks so good on a stage, but is really only surface deep. True passion, as Joy speaks so boldly through this book, is found more authentically in the person who has walked through the fire, and though they’ve been burned and charred, they come out the other side refined as gold, with a heart after God. It is what we do in our secret alone times, that blossoms and grows. This has been so true in the trials that I have experienced in my own life, both in serving in ministry as well as our adoption journey. Thank you Joy, for reminding me that this continues NOW as well, as we raise three beautiful children, in hopes that they will grow up to be Godly young men and women.
3. “Whoever you are, whatever you do and wherever you do it, we need you to show up and share yourself with us. To bring your little fish and loaves, if you will, and feed the people with what you have.”
I can’t repeat this enough. It is like my mantra. I think in the United States, we are too consumed with comparing our “accomplishments” and our “possessions” with others. This leaves us feeling disqualified, discouraged, and disengaged. No more friends! God has placed something in our hands that we can use to bless others today and that is no small fish! Joy’s book is exactly this. We have no need to be anyone but who God has created us to be, and that part may seem small IF we compare it to others. But in God’s eyes, you are a daughter or son, with full access to heaven, and whatever he has placed in your hand, you can share it, even that thing is just a pile of fabric. 🙂
Friends, if you have been discouraged and have disqualified yourself from engaging the passions in your heart, this book will wake you up!
